The Coffee story has always begun with the farmers. In Yunnan, many coffee farmers are not paid fair wages for the work they invest into each cup of coffee. Many farmers are struggling to make a living and provide for their families because they are paid as little as ¥1.5 ($0.10) per pound of coffee. Many times large companies and coffee exporters deceive the farmers into signing long contracts forcing farmers to maintain these low prices for long periods of time. In other areas, middleman “coyotes” buy up coffee at very low prices from numerous farms and earn as much as the farmers do for the entire year in one day by simply reselling the beans at higher prices.

Lose the Way- Chicago Coffee TV Part 1

The TV show filmed in Chicago Coffee that was mentioned in an earlier post has finally hit the small screen. The title of the show is 迷路 Lose the Way. What I have previewed so far seems to be a show focused on the every day lives of a handful of Chinese young professionals in their 20's and 30's with spicy intrusions of guys with knives and cops with guns. Oh and at some point they sit down to enjoy some pizza and coffee. I am sure I will give a full review of the show once I watched the first episode in its entirety but for now I have included a short clip.

A Coffee Shop Christmas

No, we didn't celebrate Christmas after New Years, it just ended up being the way I posted.

Our 20 lb bird that was just about right for the 23 people that came.

After dinner and a game of white elephant we proceeded to back sugar cookies and let the staff and their friends decorate them.

Artists at work. They definitely got into the decorating as we spend a few hours just decorating the cookies.

Someone, I won't reveal who, decided that by skipping the cookie part more sugar, icing, and candy could be directly consumed.

New Years Bash

December 31st, New Years Eve, marked one full year of coffee operations. We celebrated as any coffee shop would.

Customers enjoying our free coffee tasting. The coffees available were Colombian Suppremo, Ethiopia Jimma, and our Holiday Blend.

As far as we know we hosted the Kunming's first Barista Championship and we opened it to any Kunming area barsitas. 10 competed by preparing one shot of espresso and one cappuccino for our three judges.

We are hoping to raise awareness of the art of coffee making as well as encourgaging local baristas to improve their trade.

Less of an art and more of a science was our Chicago style Deep Dish Pizza Eating Competition. 12 competed for the rights to pizza eating champion.

1 KG of deep dish pizza left a few more than overwhelmed.
